Goodwood Revival 2009
The Morgan Motor Company display at this year’s revival featured something a bit different. All displays must be “in period”, in this case between 1946 and 1966.
We decided to make ours from 4th October 1963 – the date of the first Autocar Road Test of the +4+.
The recently restored factory owned car, and indeed the original road test and brochure vehicle was on display outside the March Motor Works. Inside the garage two members of the chassis shop built a rolling chassis each day, next to the remaining original body shell kindly loaned by Melvyn Rutter – to look as if we were in the business of making the +4+.
With reprints of the original brochure, and also of the 1963 road test to hand out, visitors to the March Motor Works were treated to a very interesting display. Almost without exception everyone thought the +4+ was a lovely design and an interesting perspective on the Morgan Motor Company.
Just 26 +4+s were sold out of the 28 bodyshells produced. One spare was used to repair 2 crashed vehicles, and the remaining shell remains unused, to one day be built onto a +4 chassis to make the 27th car.
The Morgan team really enjoyed the weekend, and everyone made a tremendous effort to dress in period clothing. For those who have not been to the Goodwood Revival – it is a must for 2010.
