The Morgan EV3 represents a new chapter for 107 year old Morgan Motor Company. Launched 3 months ago at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the EV3 prototype has captured the imagination of the motoring world. We are delighted to share the first in a series of regular updates and content throughout the development of the EV3 project, allowing customers and fans exlusive access behind the scenes #InsideMorgan.
The EV3 challenges the world of zero emissions motoring, what if an all-electric vehicle was bespoke, hand crafted and exhilarating to drive? Weighing less than 500kg, the EV3 will have a range of 150 miles, a 0-62mph time of less than 9 seconds and a top speed of 90mph. Encased within the tubular space frame chassis is a 20KWh Lithium battery and a liquid cooled 46kW motor driving the rear wheel.
The EV3 Electric program is one of the most exciting activities undertaken by Morgan for many years. We have added a number of new members to the R & D Engineering team. The team’s objective is to raise existing standards, transfer knowledge and experience throughout the company, and developing competence for this growing technology.
The supplier selection process has been completed, we elected to use a Coventry based organisation called Potenza Ltd. Potenza have a long established working relationship in the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing sector, and bring a wide range of knowledge and experience to this program. Potenza will be manufacturing the 120 volt battery and adding the high voltage system to the vehicle at their factory in Coventry.
Both companies have input into the concept design, vehicle integration and CAD modelling. This will ensure and demonstrate that fit, form and function issues are completely addressed at the design and pre-production stage.
The Vehicle Certification Authority (VCA) has been contacted to ensure the new vehicle complies with government and regulatory requirements, with this in mind we also have an intensive testing program that outlines the vehicle needs. A fundamental element of our project brief is to ensure the EV3 offers the same exhilirating driving experience as the petrol version.
Manufacturing plans have been drawn by both companies for battery manufacture and vehicle build, we are in the process of building the first two pre-production vehicles at Pickersleigh Road, and will be following a vigorous new product introduction (NPI) process to ensure a right first time vehicle is achieved. This NPI process will be rolled out to all future models.
